They suck anyway. My complex allow satellite and Time warner is the only provider in this area. is tons better but I had to move here for a job.

  • [A TOI story calls Paa one of the year’s bona fide hits along with All the Best, NY, Love Aaj Kal and Ajab prem ki ghazab kahani. The headline also credits you with setting the standards once more this year with your extraordinary work in the film. But Taran Adarsh and Nahata make appearances in the piece. the former has been quoted more than the latter. Again Adarsh is very stingy with his account of Paa’s box office. Uses the same old drivel about how it’s successful because of multiplex business (so when was the last time that films were hits based on C center business?! Not since the days or a Amitabh Bachchan.. who in those days was run down by the very same folks as appealing to the ‘masses’ and not to the ‘classes’ a la Rajesh Khanna.. and that old figure of the hapless ‘rikshawala’ would be constantly invoked to define the ‘base’ for such films.. if the ‘rickshawala’ gave us Deewar and Trishul and if the ‘aunties’ gave us Kuch Kuch Hota Hai I know whose side I’d be on!) and so and how satellite deals and a low budget and so were of the mix to make it very profitable. What does all of this mean? That the producers of Paa somehow got a hit because it was a modestly budgeted film! Who spends 50 crores on such a subject anyway? Not anyone sane Could Aamir offer testimony here? He did not even spend half that amount on TZP? Could SRK offer testimony? Yashraj spent a lot lot less than 50 crores on CDI. I could multiply the examples. So who are nutcases who expend blockbuster budgets on such offbeat films? The ones who do pay a price (pun intended!). So according to the likes of Taran and Nahata it’s a cheap film so it’s a hit (if it were that easy to get hits out of small budgets Emran Hashmi would be a superstar!), the father and son are getting remunerated by way of satellite rights (what does that have to do with the success of the film? did anyone ask Hrithik how much he or his father ‘charged’ for each of their home productions?!) etc etc. The whole narrative is designed to make the reader believe that some very skillful management of the numbers has made Paa a hit! One can spot the insidious nature of the argument right away. if you recall I told you at the very beginning that Taran and Nahata were to turn even over the first weekend. But with anyone else those superb producer decisions would be praised to the skies and the star would be called the greatest genius around. Oh but wait, here the producer is Abhishek. It’s even harder to give him credit than it is to give Amitabh bachchan credit. So let’s not talk about the producer’s triumph here. Let’s just keep praising the father’s performance because this at least moves us away from talk of a hit! It’s all so nakedly transparent that even the mentally challenged would be able to see through it.]
