I had a USB connected modem when I first got broadband, and I faced the same problem – I wanted to add WiFi. I bought an ADSL wireless router – not one that had been customised to a specific Internet provider, and I got the necessary settings from the ISP. It took me a couple of hours to set up the router, but after that I had wired and wireless Internet at home.
Next I purchased a PCMCIA wireless card for my laptop, which took about 10 minutes to install and configure.
Subsequently, I upgraded my Internet contract and my ISP supplied me with a better wireless router, which I installed and configured to replace the wireless network I had previously set up.
I now have two wired and 7 wireless devices working from this router. Some of the newer wireless devices are using integrated wireless adapters. Others are still using PCMCIA cards or USB wireless dongles to provide the WiFi connection.
A single wireless router near the centre of your home and USB dongles will probably be the cheapest and easiest way to get a WiFi environment. Make sure the USB dongles have the appropriate drivers available for the device you want to plug them into.
