  • The Big Ugly Dishes you describe are C Band satellite dishes. the smaller dishes are Ku band. Yes, back in the day, you could receive network feeds unencoded with a C band dish. The good news is that there is still free programming available for free on both C band and Ku band. Much of it is foreign language, educational, regional, or religious programming. There is also a lot of radio broadcasting available. There are about 20 satellites visible from America, that generally have about 24 active transponders, "visible" from America. You can get a good idea of what kind of programming is available at ftalist.com. Free To Air replace cable or satellite tv for most people, but makes a fun hobby that you can get into with minimal expense. On the other hand it may provide exactly the programming that suits your needs.
