>Let's try to eliminate a potential problem here. Hook the hard disk up to SATA0 and the DVD drive up to SATA1. It might be that the BIOS is detecting the IDE drive and is expecting to find an IDE hard disk there and this is confusing the installation. For now, make your DVD drive SATA1…after you get everything installed, then you can switch the DVD drive to an IDE connector if you want to.
You can buy an IDE to SATA box for bout $15 from Newegg if you want to do this, but a brand new SATA DVD drive costs $18, so a big waste of money.
Now that I read this again, your old drive may just be the problem, that old DVD. Hey, buy a new SATA one! not holding onto the crummy old one, probalby is the reason for the problems you are having.
